On and around Table Mountain

Eighteen images snapped on and near Table Mountain, the iconic flat-topped landmark that towers over Cape Town, not far from the Africa’s southernmost tip. Below is a view towards Robben Island, home to the notorious prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment.

The summit is a popular hike but with limited time, the chilly, wet and windy weather, and just a handful of hours off the plane after an eight hour flight, we opted for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, shown in the lead photo above and first photo below, which takes visitors from the lower station at 302m above sea level to the mountain top plateau at 1067m (3501ft). The Cableway, which is one of South Africa’s most popular attractions, will celebrate its centenary in 2029.

The weather at the summit was a maelstrom of wind, rain, clouds and mist on most sides to chill, wind and partial sun on another. That obviously impacted the views and made taking photos somewhat problematic, but it was all pretty astounding nonetheless.

According to Wikipedia, Table Mountain is home to 2,285 plant species. Five of those are below. I’ll snap shots of the other 2,280 next time, when I do make the time to hike to the summit.

Yes. It was cold, wet and windy.
