After what was a mostly gray and rainy afternoon, this was tonight’s sunset in four shots reflected from Kukova Špica (2427m/ 7962ft), a peak at the western end of Slovenia’s Martuljek mountain group, widely considered to be one of the most rugged and picturesque sub-ranges in the Julian Alps.

I’ll never tire of this view. (A few shots from early August 2025 are here.)

The range, which towers over the upper Sava Dolinka River valley in northwest Slovenia, borrows its name from Gozd Martuljek, the forest and town about five kilometres up the road that several of its peaks shadow over. The group constitutes one of the earliest protected areas in Slovenia and rests, almost in its entirety, within the borders of Triglav National Park.

We’re only here for a few nights to enjoy a temporary reprieve from the summer’s sultry conditions. The overnight temperature dipped to 14 C (57 F); it’s been at least three months since we’ve last experienced a sub-20 C (68 F) night.
