I’ll be back in Torun, Poland, in a few weeks, a return which took me on a quick look back at photos from previous visits to this corner of north-central Poland, and eventually to this long exposure shot of ice flows on the Vistula, the country’s longest river, on my first visit to the city back in 2017. It was as cold as it looks.
Colleagues say that spring-like conditions are in the long-range forecast and already on the ground, so I don’t expect to see any ice. I missed that by a couple of months.
While it’s not unusal for parts of the inland portions of the Vistula to freeze during the winter, this year’s extreme cold in January in northern Europe led to a freeze of the river’s estuary in Gdansk at the edge of the Baltic Sea (CNN video). That marked the first time in decades that parts of the Baltic froze.
A few more long exposure shots shots from the same chilly riverside walk are here.

I didn’t notice the frozen water, I was too busy looking at the bridge, which is incredible, but the frozen water in amazing too. Great image Bob, and thanks for joining us.
Thanks Leanne. I’m glad I brought a tripod along on that trip. I was really happy with the flowing ice’s glassy effect.
