When shooting the streets, keep your eyes wide open for quiet moments in a crowd. They’re there if you look; if you look really hard and remain patient, they might even find themselves among your favorite images. And more importantly, among your most memorable travel moments.

You can’t tell from the image, but this pair was sitting on a fairly busy street, still filled with the crowds heading home after a Good Friday Procession that wormed its way through the center of Potosi, Bolivia, a city whose vast riches helped finance much of the Spanish conquest of the 1600s.

They seemed oblivious to the people milling about, lost instead in the close bond that can only exist between a grandmother and granddaughter –-or was it mother and daughter?-– as one teaches and the other observes and absorbs. There was a love and respect so deep that this otherwise busy corner commanded silence. It was subtle but unmistakable. I’m really glad I caught this moment, one that has claimed pride of place on several of my home office walls in the past so it can be relived every day.

At 4,090m (13,418ft) above sea level, this south central Bolivian city of 130,000 is one of the highest cities in the world.
