This is one of three White-Throated Dippers I spotted one morning last winter on the Pišnica River in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, and it was behaving exactly as advertised in most descriptions: perching, hopping and dipping around fast-flowing water, in this case on a waterfall, its dipping a series of medium-speed deep knee bends. I especially liked its hop and the way it walked into water, deliberately submerging as the water grew deeper, and disappearing below a trail of bubbles.

But that action isn’t walking, but rather a feet-gripping and wing-swimming combination, as explained in its Wikipedia entry:

From a perch, it walks into the water and deliberately submerges, but it cannot defy the laws of specific gravity and walk along the bottom. Undoubtedly when entering the water, it grips with its strong feet, but the method of progression beneath the surface is by swimming, using the wings effectively for “flying” under water. It holds itself down by muscular exertion, with its head well down and its body oblique, its course beneath the surface often revealed by a line of rising bubbles.

A second and then a third made brief appearances, they too hopping and dipping on the same waterfall but a few meters away. Unfortuntely, their movements weren’t quite in synch, tossing out a fleeting idea to film it and lay it over a musical track.

I followed another along the same River but north of town the next afternoon, but the gray overcast skies and fairly dense trees coupled with a slick and slushy trail made photography difficult, so I kept my camera in my backpack. That one was quickly darting between the edges of the narrow banks, foraging between rocks instead of submerging.
