Four Photos From St. Peter’s Square, and Easter Messages

Here are four photos taken in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City a few days ago, from a quick visit that coincided with a meeting in Rome and the Roman Catholic Holy Week.

The image above and the next two below were taken on Good Friday evening when workers were setting up the square for this morning’s Easter mass, the first for Pope Leo XIV as the head of the Catholic Church. And the last was taken on Saturday morning, as typically large crowds queued for tours of St. Peter’s Basilica.

During his mass this morning, Leo spoke of “a world ravaged by wars and marked by a hatred and indifference that make us feel powerless in the face of evil”, and urged “those who have the power to unleash wars” to “choose peace”.

In his second communique of the day, Donald Trump posted this Easter morning message of peace on his Truth Social channel:

“Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckinโ€™ Strait, you crazy bastards, or youโ€™ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah.”

As of 23:10 CEST Sunday evening, it remains his only Easter message.
