In Transit: Pardubice

An old clock I saw today reminded me of this marvellous mosaic called ‘Horoscope Clock’ by Jaroslav Moravec, which takes pride of place at the train station in Pardubice, a city in central Czech Republic. At top is most of its left half, and below, most of the right.

It was created between 1957 and 1959 during the construction of the current station, which opened in 1958 to replace the old one that was damaged during the Second World War. Below is a wider shot showing it in all of its modernist glory. Below that is a shot of a station underpass that I found irresistibly colorful.

These were taken during a very brief transit in 2009 so I don’t know if the underpass and stairs to the platforms are still the same –I know from more recent transits that the station was further rennovated during the past decade– but I suspect they are. The mosaic and other elements were protected under cultural heritage law. If you cross paths with this post and have visited the station recently, I’d love to hear from you.
