The Slovenian government finally lifted its restriction on inter-regional travel effective yesterday morning, so we took off for the mountains yesterday afternoon.

Here are some shots from a hike today through the Tamar Valley in Triglav National Park in northwest Slovenia’s Julian Alps, including shots of a few of the dozen or so avalanches we witnessed. They were all fairly small, looked more like cascading waterfalls and were viewed from a safe distance, but they have been deadly here in recent days. Three mountain climbers were killed and three others seriously injured by two avalanches last weekend in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, another range about 50km east of here. One was a member of a rescue team.

The Tamar valley stretches southward from the Planica valley, home to its eponymous Nordic ski center, a regular host of the FIS Ski Flying World Championships. The lodge in the valley is open and serving a few standard mountain dishes. No booze, though, which is very un-standard, Covid lockdown or not.
